LGBTQ+ Competing Narratives

With the passing of the transgender bathroom ban that has happened recently the LGBT community is still struggling for their voices for acceptance to be heard. The media is full of people who are with and against the LBGT community and there are many competing narratives who want to persuade their readers that their thoughts are more valuable than anything else.

As reported by lifesitenews.com at the annual White House Easter Egg hunt Obama promoted LGBT rights there and opened his arms to all families same sex and opposite sex alike. In the article the author backs up claims by stating quotes from various political figures to emphasize the fact that Obama is perhaps the most pro-LGBT president in history and that including same sex parents is actually a good thing. Others didn’t think same sex parents should have attended this event for the fact that they were worried about what their kids would think. One source stated that a little boy named Jordan wrote to president Obama and thanked him for blessing him with his two adoptive dads and that he had found his forever family.

Now while this article focuses on a positive way of promoting LGBT rights during an Easter Egg hunt at the White House Texas lawmakers are looking to legalize LGBT discrimination.

The govenor of Texas has said that the bill that would ban Texas transgender from using the bathroom is necessary and should be passed. Included in this article are quotes from other sources that can be seen as credible by the reader.

Another article regarding the new Texas law which give citizens the “right to discriminate” is also making headlines and being called “the most extreme anti lgbt proposal yet.

The NFL has stated that this bill will make it hard for the state to hold the super bowl and this bill would cost texas 8.7 million in lost revenue.

The argument of gay marriage and allowing same sex couples to be married can be argued about for days on end. A blog posted about the argument of whether same sex marriage should be seen as equal or approved by others states a few claims and provide evidence to support those claims. The way the author of the blog provided evidence and brought religion into each point only makes their points more valid and someone would persuade someone who has the same values or the same mindset to agree with them. Also bringing in how anit-lgbt supporters may have their own point of view the author doesn’t discredit those who may not support their ideas. The use of political and legal ideas may draw people in or push them away since everyone has their own political views.

Both articles talk about the same thing in two very different ways and both of them tackle various obstacles that still face the lgbt community today. The persuasive language used in each article make them both an interesting read.

LGBT: Rights or Wrongs?

Are you With or Against Them?

President Trump a.k.a "Twitter Fingers" has already seemed to make a lot of people angry even though he's only been in office for a month. Trump has already tried and failed with his immigration ban and now he’s back at it again with his law making strategies. Trump’s potential law: ban transgender restrooms in public schools.

The first article I came across was written by Bustle.com and this article discussed how Trump has pledged to protect the LGBT community. Of course Trump went to Twitter and thanked all of the LGBT supporters for supporting him and his campaign. The tweet he posted on June 14, 2016 read “Thank you to the LGBT community! I will fight for you while Hilary brings in more people that will threaten your freedoms and beliefs”.  This tweet was posted just days after the traumatic shooting at a gay nightclub in Chicago.  The other article that I read was by MSNBC and comes from the perspective of the Democratic party and how they feel as if Trump is taking a few steps backwards instead of forwards.

Both of these articles have their own opinion on Trump’s recent endeavor however the article written by Bustle.com seemed to be giving Trump the benefit of the doubt. The article gives praise to Trump to standing up for the LGBT community and how he has vowed to protect them. The article written by MSNBC however, has a bone to pick with President Trump. The MSNBC article states that Trump’s claims of him being “Pro LGBT” are simply false. The Bustle.com article backed up their claims that Trump was supportive of the LGBT community by explaining how he has donated money to AIDs foundation , waved a gay flag during one of his campaigns and supported Peter Theil openly stating that he himself is gay at a Republican convention. The MSNBC article goes as far as to say that Trump isn’t a “cultural warrior” and isn’t concerned about LGBT youth. This article even said what Trump does is more important than what he actually thinks.

The demographics that are being targeted in both articles are directed towards a young and older audience, specifically anyone who is apart of the LGBT community or those who support the LGBT community as a whole.

The Bustle.com article gave evidence to support their way of thinking by listing what all Trump has done to show the LGBT community that he stands by their side. They also stress the idea that even though Trump is apart of the republican party he still is for the LGBT community. These examples enhanced their idea of persuading their audience that Trump isn’t as bad as everyone may think.

The article written by MSNBC includes quotes from the Trump administration that stated that Trump plans to remove former President Obamas notion of transgender bathrooms in public schools. This article also includes a quote from Sen. Markey which could be a form of testimony since he is a Senator and the audience may value his opinion.
